Mission in
London’s Economy, or MiLE, exists to help Christians and Churches
relate Christian faith to the many complex and varied areas of life
that come under the heading of ‘London’s Economy’. We believe that
Jesus Christ is Lord of all Creation and that nothing can be ‘left
off God’s agenda’. As a consequence, both Christians and Churches
have to
make sense of the inter-connectedness of God’s mission with the
intimate, corporate and global dimensions that have such an impact
on daily living. London’s economy is an obvious example.
At
present there isn’t any specific membership with a subscription.
Instead MiLE maintains a mailing list of supporters which you are
very welcome to be a part of by contacting the MiLE Office. We are
enormously grateful for the grants kindly given by denominational
groups in the Greater London area, and this is just about sufficient
for our present needs. However, we are always pleased to receive
further donations from individuals, local churches or other groups
as a need may well arise in the future when it becomes extremely
necessary to expand our work. MiLE’s Treasurer is Geoff Hammond, 32
Pearl Road, Walthamstow, London E17 4QZ
geoffhammond@ntlworld.com.
MiLE has set itself the following objectives:
-
To co-ordinate the churches’ interventions in
discussion of London’s economy
-
To respond on behalf of the churches to consultation
exercises on London’s economy
-
To support and resource workplace chaplains
-
To support and resource Christians working in the
institutions of London’s economy
-
To educate churches in the issues facing London’s
economy and workplace spirituality so that they might be able to
respond appropriately
-
To work with other faith communities in order to create
co-ordinated faith-community responses to the issues facing
London’s economy
For
each objective there is a practitioner group which sets itself
particular tasks, which and keeps them under constant review. The
only exception is the single practitioner group covering the first
two objectives. Each group’s members are actively involved in the
field, but MiLE is always on the lookout for more people who would
like to take part.
There
may be one of our groups which interests you. If you decide you
would like to join a group, simply get in touch with the Chair of
the relevant group. You will find their name and e-mail address on
our Contacts page.
We
employ very few staff who all work part time. Occasions do arise,
such as a general mailing or running a MiLE event, when practical
help is required. On the other hand, you may have an idea for an
initiative or project which you would be prepared to run on MiLE’s
behalf. We would naturally want to encourage you, provided there was
nothing similar already being run by a kindred organisation. In
either instance you should contact the MiLE office on
info@mile.org.uk. The office is situated at the Royal Foundation
of St Katharine in Limehouse (www.stkatharine.org.uk).
We do
run events, but only very occasionally. Our experience is that most
of our MiLE supporters are extremely busy and would prefer to be
kept in touch by other means. This is normally done through our
website where we are naturally happy to advertise and promote events
which kindred organisations might be organising.
One valuable thing you can do is to let others know that we exist,
which may be individual Christians, but also your local church or
other Christian groups to which you belong. Encourage them to visit
our website and keep coming to us with your ideas. One final thing;
we greatly appreciate your prayerful support for MiLE and its work.
Actually, that’s the most important thing you can do!
